Whether you’re interested in a guided eco-tour, passionate about keeping our preserve pristine during our trash cleanup event, or eager to help enrich local biodiversity by planting native species, there’s an opportunity for everyone. We have some new scheduled events!

Sat. February 7, 2026.  Conservation Project. Scouting America Troop 66 & Weed Warriors: Clearing invasive plants, focusing on removing phragmites from the area north of the Dismal Brook and west of the railroad embankment where a team planted swamp black oaks in November 2025. Bring shovels, pick mattocks, rakes, loppers, and other helpful tools. Carry-in 1/4 mile and carry out. Please remember to wear boots (preferably waterproof) or old shoes and old clothes. We’ll meet at 9:30 at the Opalanie trailhead on Durham Avenue in Metuchen.

Sign up to Volunteer

The Barnes Commission works with various groups who partner with us throughout the year to steward the flora, fauna, and waters of the preserve.  We also recommend that local residents and others participate in our mission of “protecting and preserving the ecological, historical, and recreational values of the area.”  Please sign up to participate in a scheduled event.
